Start in Spain, where Garnacha turns out to be the same grape the French call Grenache and the Sardinians call Cannonau. Then a Cabernet Sauvignon that isn't an ancient noble variety at all, but a natural cross of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc — only proven by DNA in 1996. A Petite Sirah that has never been Syrah; it's Durif, nearly extinct in its French homeland and thriving in Paso Robles. A Pinot Grigio that's a color mutation of Pinot Noir rather than a variety in its own right. An Orange Muscat named for its aroma, not its color.
