holiday reds tasting no. 1

Els Nanos

Producer: Josep Foraster
Region: Catalunya
Grapes: 70% Tempranillo, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Trepat

A fruit bomb that packs a little punch. A huge nose of cherry, blackberry and currant explodes into the palate with bramble and purple flowers dominating. A touch of grip and a fruity finish.

Grilled burgers, pasta with lemon and ricotta, bacon and eggs

holiday reds tasting no. 2

Rosso La Grondaia

Producer: Olivastri Tommaso
Region: Abruzzo, Italy
Grapes: 100% Montepulciano

Made from select vineyards planted with a clone of Montepulciano, this wine is complex in the best way. Ruby red with violet reflections and notes of oregano and boysenberry on the nose. The palate is full and rich yet held up by bright acidity, like a dark cherry that still has a hint of sour.

Baked mac n cheese, black bean burgers, beef tacos

Lodi, CA

Cuvee Des Drilles

Region: Gaillac, France
Grapes: Duras, Gamay, Braucol

A deep violet in colour with aromas of cedarwood, white pepper and black plums backed up by hints of marjoram. Moderately full-bodied on the palate with supple tannins. Look for further flavours of dark red fruits and licorice. The finish is lingering with spicy notes.

Braised lamb, BBQ ribs, chile verde stew

holiday reds tasting no. 5

Fredignac Cuvee La Favorite

Producer: Chateau Fredignac
Region: Bordeaux, France
Grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc

A fruity, juicy wine with swathes of black currant and berry flavors. The wines depth and complexity from the ancient vines shows itself in the length of the finish and the smoky, spicy characteristics. The youthful touch shows itself in that the fruits are fresh and pronounced, and not stewed or overripe like some Bordeauxs. This is the wine to drink to convince a friend that Bordeaux can be approachable, or maybe the bottle to finally sway you!

Steak frites, buffalo burgers, dark meat turkey, green bean casserole

Max

Producer: Tinedo
Region: La Mancha, Spain
Grapes: Tempranillo

A more complex wine from La Mancha with persistent notes of strawberry jam and wild flower. The palate adds a touch of balsamic and licorice to the red fruits and blends some dark cherry into that strawberry jam note.

Steak au poivre, Teppanyaki, roast beef sandos
